Set up in 2001, the Dot NAME top-level domain is the single TLD intended for personal sites only. These domains can be personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other titles people are popular by. At first, just 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you planned to purchase john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already registered third-level names remained operational.
